A big travel hindrance is now over

On 20th March a bridge over the River Lokurwa in East Kapoeta County was opened. Two retired engineers from Netherlands had come to supervise the construction of a Baley bridge over the river. Emiritus Bishop Paride Taban of the Diocese of Torit had the pleasure to drive the first car over the bridge, which was his brainchild. The bridge is a second hand unit of Baley bridge transported from the Netherlands. This bridge is similar to the one that was built in 2000 over the River Kuron and another over River Aswa near Nimule two years later. The two engineers have constructed a number of Baley bridges on the Kapoeta – Torit – Juba road.
The River Lokurwa has through the years been a serious hindrance for travelers from Narus to Nanynagachor, Kuron and Boma. Especially in the rainy seasons. Lot of time has been spent on the riverbank waiting for the water to decrease to levels where vehicles could pass. Lot of travelers also have experienced not to manage to climb the steep riverbank on both sides. And they have got stuck in the bottom of the river waiting for somebody to pull them up. A number of vehicles have been washed away by the river. But this is now history thanks to the new bridge supported by Diocese of Torit and the partners and people from the Peace Village in Kuron.
Emiritus Bishop Taban want to name the new bridge Father Mathew Haumann’s Memorial since it was the late Fr. Mathew Haumann who was most instrumental to realization of this bridge.

This is an Easter Gift to the people who have been wading through the mud. This gift will be bridging our people for peace for years to come.
